December 9, 2022 – Symposium VVKV – Unicef België: Childrens’ Rights in Health Care

Dear colleagues,

On 9th December 2022, the VVKV (Vlaamse Vereniging voor Kinderverpleegkundigen) and Unicef België , organize a symposium : “Kinderrechten in de Zorg” (Childrens’ Rights in Health Care).

It’s a live and interactive event, with accreditation.

Children’s rights are at the heart of child and family-oriented care.

The International Convention on the Rights of the Child was drafted by the United Nations in 1989 and ratified by Belgium in 1990.

A year earlier, in 1988, the European Association for Children in Hospital (EACH) drew up the EACH Charter. In this Charter, the rights of sick children and their families before, during and after a hospital stay and other care institutions are elaborated through 10 points. To date, Belgium has not officially ratified the EACH Charter. However, since 2006 these 10 points have been incorporated in a certain way in the Royal Decree regarding the Care Program Pediatrics & Neonatology for children’s wards within hospitals.

But what are these children’s rights and do we always apply them? Where do we stand as a country, as a healthcare sector and even as an individual (care) professional? Are the rights of (sick) children only valid in hospital? And are they just beautiful words or is there also science and policy behind it?

Too abstract? It’s more specific than you think.

In this symposium you will be taken in an interactive way on a journey through information, positive critical (self) reflection, awareness and interprofessional collaboration about these children’s rights in our daily practice. A journey from a germinating seed in its growth to a sturdy tree with children’s rights deeply rooted.
